Electric Car Motor History. First Part.
One of the oldest and preferred methods for automobile propulsion is electricity. The first use of electric car motor was in the middle of 19th century. In this time gasoline cars could not achieve the same level of convenient use as electricity vehicle. The Europe countries support widespread development of electric motors and use electricity for innovations, because not many countries have enough natural fossil resources.
Americans began devote attention to the electric vehicles in the late 1890s and early 1900s, after introduction by A.L. Ryker the first electric tricycle.
Electric vehicles had a lot of advantages over gasoline cars, but they were not speed enough. Cars with internal combustion engine had the smell, noise and oscillation. Electric car motors were simple in use: they did not require changing gear, hand crank. So the wealthy customers (especially women due to ease of operation) bought them for city riding, where the limit speed was not the disadvantage.
The popularity of electric car peaked in 1912 when power infrastructure was developed and most of homes began use the electricity. 38 percent of American automobiles were powered by electricity which was the biggest percent in the world.
In the 1920s were discovered the large reserves of petroleum in California, Texas, Oklahoma. The fuel became affordable. So customers can use gasoline cars for travelling cheaper, faster and further than using electric cars. Also the invention of electric starter by Charles Kettering in 1912 made easier to use gasoline cars and avoid necessity of a hand cranking for starting. Henry Ford initiated production low priced gas-powered vehicles for $440. So after 1920 electric car production industry was disappeared.
There were some attempts to create new models electric car motor using new transistor technology and improved batteries. In 1959 the National Union Electric Company was introduced an electric car the Henney Kilowatt. But unfortunately the price was too expensive comparing to gasoline equivalent. But it was a new step in development of electrical engines.
